RAIN THAT ONCE WAS
lyrics © Mojdeh Stoakley

Calmly I reside lying face down in my pillow, but shivering,
for the cold wood floor burns my skin.

Quietly I listen to the footsteps in the hallway
But the sound is muffled by a slamming door.

Carefully I watch as hail,
which was snow, which was rain,
Hit my window!
“PATTER! PATTER!” they say to me,
but the window responds
with a, "CRACK" and then it shattered,
and in comes a not-so-gentle breeze
Which waits for the right moment to tease my senses
So I can almost smell the rain that once was!

O King,
I have seen, in the way, what no eye hath seen and no ear heard.

The pool of safety is dried up; the plain of ease is scorched yellow now.
How many calamities have descended, how many will descend?
My eyes rain until my bed, drenched,
but my sorrow is not for myself, by God
but my sorrow is not for myself, by God
but my sorrow is not for myself, by God, by God

I fear lest, bereft of the melody of the dove of heaven,
ye will sink back to the shades of utter loss,
and never having gazed upon the beauty of the rose, return
and never having gazed upon the beauty of the rose, return
return to water and clay (return to the water and clay)
return to water and clay (return to the water and clay)
return to water and clay (return to the water and clay)
(Never having gazed!)
return to water and clay (return to the water and clay)
Never having gazed!
return to water and clay (return to the water and clay)
return to water and clay (return to the water and clay)

oh...

So I can, so I can, so I can almost smell the rain
So I can, so I can, so I can almost smell the rain
So I can, so I can, so I can almost smell the rain
(Never having gazed!)
So I can, so I can, so I can almost smell the rain
So I can, so I can, so I can almost smell the rain
(Never having gazed!)
So I can, so I can, so I can almost smell the rain
So I can, so I can, so I can almost smell the rain

The hail, which was snow,
which was rain, hit my window.
"Patter! Patter!" they say to me,
but the window responds with a, "CRACK"
and then it shattered.
